Dodson & Horrell Polo Championships

We were blessed  by the weather doing the right thing at the right time with enough rain to soften the previously hard ground in the week before the tournament and dry weather on the weekend.

It was a fantastic weekend with  8 teams entering overall, 4 in each section.  Stewarton put out some of their inexperienced players for a first run out in the tournament and these players acquitted themselves very well.  Although the teams did not come home with any spoils, the upper sector team put on a strong performance to beat an experienced Errol side on Sunday

Burnfoot won the upper section ably captained by former high goal player, Alasdair Archibald playing alongside his young guns.  The lower section was won by a tried and tested Kinross side who benefitted from years experience playing together.

It was a fantastic weekend and one we are looking forward to repeating next year

Dodson & Horrell to Sponsor Tournament

We are delighted that Dodson & Horrell will be sponsoring our annual tournament on August 4th/5th.  The tournament attracts players from all over Scotland and will be a wonderful event

Dodson & Horrell are Europe's leading horse feed manufacturers and backed up by expert nutrionist it is a winning team.

If you would like like to come along to watch, entrance is free.   Please bring a picnic and wear casual clothing.  Play starts at 1pm

Edinburgh Tournament

It was close but no cigar at the Edinburgh tournament at the weekend. After six long years the team pulled off a surprise win against Dundee and Perth on Saturday to send them to the final.

Awaiting them in the final was a very good Edinburgh side so it was always going to be a tough match. The first chukka the Edinburgh team got off to a flyer helped along by some penalties. The rest of the match was equally hard fought with the Edinburgh team putting in an excellent performance to win.

Not a bad first outing. Lessons have been learned and now the team is eagerly looking forward to the Border Reivers tournament in June.

Frostbite League

We have reached the half way point of the Frostbite League and seen some excellent matches.  Not Fast, Just Furious have really dominated the league so far with team captain Fabienne Renfrew proving very quick on the ball.  Ably back up by her teammates they have been the team to beat.

We look forward to rest of the games to see who comes out on top but at the moment Not Fast, Just Furious look difficult to beat.

Spring News

We are entering Spring although it doesn't feel like it yet with freezing temperatures and snow on the ground.  Despite the cold the club is very busy with lessons and lots of people coming out with temperatures.  Many honing their skills before the Frostbite League starts on February 18th.

We have five teams entered for the Frostbite League.  The teams are made up of one beginner, one novice and one more experienced player and will be the first opportunity for our beginners to experience match play.  Matches will take place on Sundays at 2pm.  Spectators are welcome.

Later on in Spring will be our Arena tournament on March 24th/25th where we look forward to welcoming teams from other clubs.  It is hoped we will have a novice section and a section for the more experienced players.  It will be a lovely way to see out the arena season before hitting the grass on April 1st.  Let's hope by then the weather is a lot warmer

2018 A Look Ahead

We have a fantastic year in 2017 with the club achieving considerable growth both in members and facilities and we expect the club to continue to grow in 2018

The year starts off with the Frostbite League in February.  A league for our members to warm up their skills for the Summer season and for some of the newer players a chance to have their first experience of competitive play.

In March we are taking members and anyone else who would like to join in over to Sotogrande, the mecca of European Polo, for a Polo holiday.  Always nice to play in the Sun at that time of year!  It is suitable for any standard and one of our members had only had a couple of lessons before the last holiday we ran and even then she was fairly new to riding so please let us know if you would like to come along.  It will cost roughly 450 euros per day, all inclusive plus flights.

April sees us start the Polo Challenge.  This amazing event is for three lucky people who have never played Polo before but would welcome the opportunity to take part in Polo boot camp and train as a team to play a tournament at the end of the two months training.  It is a life changing experience.

In June we have a six week course starting again for those new to Polo but this course is a lot less intensive than the Polo Challenge.

July brings the holidays so we will be running Polo holidays at ours and having a tournament.  The holidays will be full days of Polo with some time off to see the sights  of Edinburgh

All in all it is a packed schedule and we would love you to join us for some of the events or to learn Polo in our dedicated Polo school.

It's that time of year again.  Food and wine and promises of things to come.  Why not buy your loved ones something they will really enjoy in the New Year?  A Polo lesson voucher.  Always a welcome present and sure to bring a smile to anyone's face.  To get your voucher just go here and click on either group or private lesson voucher.  No stress, no wandering around shops, just a couple of clicks and you are done!

Winter Season

The nights are drawing in and there is a distinct chill in the air which means a sad goodbye to Summer.  Thankfully, the Polo does not stop there.  We have a full Winter programme, not only with Polo but a few club nights out for good measure.

On Sundays we will be heading to the pub for a late lunch after chukkas.  Friends and family are welcome to join in.  The club has a break over Christmas and then in February the Frostbite League starts.

New players are welcome to join us and for those who have never tried Polo before we have lessons available too so why not kick out the Winter blues and join us?

Sotogrande Trip

It all started in the Champagne bar.  How often does that happen?  Yes, it may have been 4.30 in the morning but undeterred my members made haste towards those little silver stools located at the Champage bar in Edinburgh Airport.  A few drinks later it was last call for the flight and a rather large gulp down.

Once on the flight I think we were all glad we had had some alcoholic refreshment as the plane was making an unholy noise that sounded like the roof was about to rip off.  Nervous moments for everyone involved.  A unscheduled pit stop at Manchester to fix the problem determined that it could not be fixed and we would have to change planes.

A few hours later we arrived in Malaga.  Beautiful, sunny weather quickly made us forget the difficulties of travel.  Luciano kindly picked us up and an hour later we arrived at Iridike, more than ready for lunch and to plunge into the pool.  A few more beers lifted tired spirits.

Later in the day it was onto the ponies and playing chukkas, for one of our group, it was her first chukkas ever.  Bravely she competed and was not to be put off by the speed.  After chukkas, more beer to watch the Sun go down over the pitch and exchange polo stories with the neighbors swiftly followed by a delicious dinner.

The next day started off with breakfast at a leisurely 9.30am which suited everyone after the previous day.  Onto the pitch at 11 for a lessons/stick and ball followed by lunch, pool, more chukkas and a fantastic Asado (Argentine bbq) to finish the day.  I was delighted to be joined by an old friend and someone who started his Polo career off at Stewarton, Peter Donald Reid.  Now a Patron who plays in Dubai and Sotogrande.

The next day was more of the same and then sadly Monday came and everyone went home.  Meanwhile I nipped off to my apartment in Sotogrande for some r and r before Winter season starts.  All in all a fantastic holiday.  Argentina next in January.  Watch this space for details.

Summer Update

What a great season we are having so far.  Early Summer saw us blessed with glorious weather encouraging many new people to come out and play leading to us quadrupling our membership.

The arena which was finished before Christmas has been an absolute blessing on the wetter days meaning we have lost no days to cancellation this Summer.  Our wooden horse hitting cage is going up as I write this and should be finished by the end of the week.  Our members will be very happy to practice on that and improve their swings without the need for a horse.

We ran two successful courses for adults and juniors.  Our adult course led to all the participants enjoying it so much that now they have joined the club and are looking to buy their first polo pony.  Exciting times for them

In September we are heading out to Sotogrande in Spain for a long weekend to enjoy lots of polo, food and wine.  Should be a great time.  There are still a couple of places left if you want to join us.

Not only have we had a lots more members join but we also have a lot more horses at the yard and are nearly full.  If you are considering livery with us now, please get in touch soon to avoid disappointment.

With a couple of months left of Summer season why not start Polo now whilst the weather is still warm.  We have a full programme of events for the Winter so the fun doesn't have to stop once the nights draw in.
